Good News, part 1

The gospel literally means good news. We talk a lot about the gospel, but do we spend time to contemplate what is the news that is good? Some, if not most will say that the good news is the gospel of salvation.  God sent his only begotten son to die on a cross for our sin and whoever believes in him will be saved. But if that is all there is to the gospel, then why does Matthew say in 4:23, "And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people." and in 24:14 he says, "And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come." Here and in other places in the Gospels, the good news is the kingdom has come. What does this good new have to do with the gospel salvation?
